2025 Workshops

Stephanie will be teaching less in 2025 than in previous years. Currently one pubic workshop is scheduled for July. Other opportunities will be announced as planned.

The Elegant Slim Volume

July 15 & 16, 2025, Tuesday & Wednesday, 10 am - 4 pm

In-person at Shepherd & Maudsleigh Studio

West Newton, MA (in the greater Boston area)

Simple bindings on small books? An opportunity for creativity!

Variations in sewing method, finishing details, or materials, provide a creative opportunity when binding books. The workshop will begin by creating patterned papers for covers with handmade “rubber” stamps, then these will be used to make a variety of simple softcover bindings. Using thread, wood, wire, beads, and paper, we will build on the basic pamphlet to expand the options of this humble binding. By considering all the details and materials, the most basic of bindings can be elevated to simple elegance. The instructor has gathered these techniques over many years in bookbinding and conservation.

This workshop is an exploration of details, variations, design, and material possibilities, rather than focusing solely on structure. We will make as many models as our time allows, and collect them in a softcover slipcase. Suggestions for adapting the basic forms to create other variations will be discussed. Our models will serve as inspiration for future work. A handout will be provided. Some bookbinding experience is helpful.

Shepherd & Maudsleigh Studio is located in the greater Boston area. To learn more and register follow this link to the registration page on their website shop.
